UNDERSTANDING THE PhASES OF THE NZ CURRICULUM
The New Zealand curriculum has been under major review. It has made a shift toward a more knowledge rich curriculum that builds students' understanding by carefully sequencing disciplinary (subject) knowledge and practices in each learning area.
Curriculum levels have now been replaced with phases. Each year level within a phase has teaching sequences that include knowledge and practice statements to support students in building a deep understanding and fluency in each learning area.
Phase 1 - Year 0-3
Phase 2 - Year 4-6
Phase 3 - Year 7-8
